Consideration of the change in resident population from 1981 to 2011 in terms of island group areas illustrates the severity of population change in particular locations in the Outer Hebrides . For Census purposes Lewis and Harris are treated as one island, which is geographically correct. Nearby the Harris Golf Club offers well kept greens and views of the hills, but there is no play on Sundays. [24] However, a Sunday ferry service between Berneray (North Uist) and Leverburgh (An t-Òb) in the south of Harris has been introduced with relatively little controversy and now operates all year round. The civil parish of Harris is considered to include St Kilda, an uninhabited small archipelago 40 miles (65 kilometres) west-northwest of North Uist, and the uninhabited islet Rockall, which is 230 miles (370 kilometres) west of North Uist. Benbecula experienced an increase of 44% over the last 60 years. Tinted shots of parts of the island were used by Stanley Kubrick as the surface of Jupiter in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.[25].

The island had a population of 21,031 in 2011. Whilst Harris experienced the same rate of decline between 1991 and 2001, Barra and Vatersay also saw a decline of 11% over the same time period whilst figures for South Uist (which includes the island of Eriskay) report the highest drop in population of 15%. In actual numbers this amounts to an increase of 9 people. The boundary was originally between the lands of Clan MacLeod of Harris and Clan MacLeod of Lewis, the latter selling to Colin Mackenzie, 1st Earl of Seaforth. Tarbert is the main port and main settlement of Harris, with a population of about 550. Lewis/Harris is the most populous of the Scottish islands, and had just over 21,000 residents in 2011, a rise of 5.6% from the 2001 census total of 19,918. Islands such as Eriskay, Harris, Scalpay and Berneray have seen a particularly marked decline in population in the last 50 years. Before and after the re-population of the Hebrides, the Celtic peoples were the predominant social group, with roots back into central Europe. A dispute over 3,000 hectares (7,400 acres) between Alexander Hume Macleod and Francis, Lord Seaforth (respective proprietors of Harris and Lewis) led to Court of Session inquiries in 1805 and 1850 and ended with Lord Chief Justice Campbell traversing the boundary on foot.
